Students serve up winning menus for London 2012
Students from West Yorkshire, London, Staffordshire and Birmingham have won a competition to design a dish to be served in the Athletes’ Village during the London 2012 Games.
Pupils from Shrivenham C of E Primary School in Wiltshire with their dishes and Get Set network plaque.
The ‘Get Set to Exercise Your Taste Buds’ competition was run by the official London 2012 education programme Get Set, and aimed to find dishes suitable for Olympic and Paralympic athletes.
A total of 30 dishes from 13 schools were chosen from over 6,500 entries from across the UK to compete in the final at London’s Westminster Kingsway College.
Finalists cooked for an expert panel of judges that included Olympian Michelle Robinson, Paralympian Clare Strange, Aramark Senior Chefs Gerrard O’Sullivan and Doug Bradley, and representatives from the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG).
Helme C of E Primary School from West Yorkshire claimed first place in the Primary School category, while London’s Lambeth Academy won in the Secondary School category.
Churnet View Middle School from Staffordshire (Secondary School highly commended category), Wilson Stuart School from Birmingham (Special School category) and Westminster Kingsway College from London (Further Education college category) were also among the winners.
As well as offering the chance to feed an athlete, the programme provided a real-life context for young people to learn about healthy lifestyles and the importance of a nutritionally balanced diet.
LOCOG Chair Seb Coe said: ‘The Get Set to Exercise Your Taste Buds competition shows the many ways children and young people can get involved and take part in the London 2012 Games.
‘These students have not only learnt about healthy and active lifestyles, but their meals could be providing the fuel for the athletes competing in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.’
