The Cycling Time Trial at next year’s Olympic Games will start and finish at the historic Hampton Court Palace.

Seb Coe, LOCOG Chair, and Michael Day, Chief Executive of Historic Royal Palaces, at Hampton Court Palace – the venue for the start and finish of the Olympic Time Trial event.

The event is one of two Road Cycling disciplines and involves competitors riding individually against the clock over a distance of 44km for men and 29km for women. Riders start at 90-second intervals and the one with the quickest time wins the gold medal.

Seb Coe, Chair of LOCOG, said: ‘Hampton Court Palace is a stunning venue that will showcase the area. We have worked closely with the International Cycling Union (UCI) and our partners to ensure that we have the best possible sporting course for the athletes and we are confident of spectacular races and worthy winners.

’Following Team GB’s medal success in Beijing, the Road Cycling events really will bring the magic of the Games to life for many thousands of spectators.’

Members of the public can watch the races for free and do not need tickets to attend. The races take place on the fifth day of the Games, 1 August, and will start on the driveway of the Palace and finish outside the grounds. The course passes through the London Borough of Richmond, the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, Surrey and Elmbridge Borough.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: ‘This is another great example of how we are bringing events to the outer boroughs of the city so that all Londoners can feel the buzz of the Games.’
