FISA World Rowing Junior Championships at Eton Dorney test Olympic Rowing venue
Some of the world’s best young rowers took part in the FISA World Rowing Junior Championships at Eton Dorney from 3-7 August.
The Rowing venue is set in a 400-acre park with a nature conservation area, with the course taking competitors past the historic backdrop of Windsor Castle
The Championships were also a test event for London 2012 at Eton Dorney. This allows the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) to test its arrangements for the Olympic Rowing events next year.
‘This is a world class venue and it was important for us to test the venue and procedures for next year,’ said Debbie Jevans, LOCOG Director of Sport. ‘We were specifically looking at the field of play, conditions on the lake, how the boat pontoons on the lake worked, how our temporary infrastructure worked and how we deal with changing weather and competition schedules.
‘It was also important to test how our teams work together in preparation for next year. We extend our thanks to FISA, British Rowing, and all who worked hard at the event, especially the volunteers, many of whom we will use for next year.’
Denis Oswald, President of FISA (the International Rowing Committee), said: ‘LOCOG has done an excellent job, is well prepared, and well advanced as far as construction is concerned. It has stated it is on time or even ahead of schedule and this gives them the flexibility and the time now to look at adjustments that can still be made.’
