Here’s the story of London 2012 this week through pictures…

The Paralympic Games medals were unveiled at the opening of a new display at the British Museum for the Cultural Olympiad. The public will be able to see the medals as part of ‘Mine to Medals: The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games medals’. Paralympians Ade Adepitan and Baroness Tanni-Grey Thompson are pictured at the unveiling with the medal designer Lin Cheung.

One side of the medal represents ‘Spirit in motion’, the motto of the Paralympic movement, and features a close-up section of an outstretched wing of the Greek Goddess of Victory. The reverse of the medal incorporates a direct mould from the heart area of the plaster cast of ‘The Nike of Paionios’, the Greek Goddess of Victory, that forms part of the British Museum Cast Collection.

In other news, International Inspiration arrived in Uganda. Over 300 teachers and students along with leading figures in sport and education saw HRH the Earl of Wessex launch the internationl sports legacy programme there at a special Olympic festival of sports at Kyadondo rugby grounds.

This week also saw the launch of the London 2012 Olympic Truce programme. World Athletics Championship bronze medallist Andy Turner (110m hurdles) joined in the celebrations with pupils at the Swanlea School in Whitechapel, Tower Hamlets who have been working together to explore the themes of the Olympic Truce.

The Olympic Truce originated at the Ancient Olympic Games, called to allow athletes to travel safely. It was re-introduced to the modern Games in 1992 and aims to use sport to help promote conflict resolution and to help build bridges between communities. The London 2012 Olympic Truce programme will offer young people the chance to learn about the Olympic Truce and to take part in sporting and cultural activities.

A nice note to finish on for the weekend, I think? Have a good one!
