How it works

There are five events: men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. There will be 172 competitors and all matches will be the best of three sets, apart from the men’s singles final which will be over five.

Who’s hot

Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic will be favourites for the men’s title and Andy Murray may also be in with a shout. On the women’s side the Williams sisters do well in SW19 so will expect to shine alongside the current world No1 Caroline Wozniacki.

Home hopes

Andy Murray is the outstanding player from Team GB, though there will be hopes for Laura Robson and Heather Watson. Alex Bodganovic and Elena Baltacha will also hope for an invitation and try to take advantage of the home crowd.

The road to London

  • 29 August-11 September US Open, Flushing Meadows, New York
  • 16 January-29 January 2012 Australian Open, Melbourne
  • 22 May-5 June French Open Roland Garros, Paris
  • 25 June-8 July All England Club Championships, Wimbledon

The stage

Wimbledon will host the tournament and organisers will hope they will not need to close the new retractable Centre Court roof.

What they say

“I’ll play mixed for sure. I’d definitely play if Laura [Robson]‘s up for it. I like mixed doubles. I don’t think it should be at every tournament but at the major tournaments it’s a good thing”

Andy Murray

Did you know?

Mixed doubles is at the Games for the first time since 1924. The last time Wimbledon staged an Olympic event was in 1908, when Great Brtain won all six gold medals.

You can apply for Olympic tickets until 26 April. Visit www.tickets.london2012.com Tickets to watch Olympic events are not sold on a first-come-first-served basis – applications can be submitted at any stage in the 42-day period from 15 March to 26 April. There is no advantage in applying on the first day or the last day

Online payment is exclusively by Visa debit card, credit card or pre-paid card. Alternatively you can submit a paper application form which is available in Lloyds TSB branches and pay by cheque or postal order as well as Visa

Customers may not get all the tickets they apply for owing to high demand. Once an application is processed, customers cannot change their orders and must have the funds to pay for the tickets they have been allocated

This is a fair process and a fair ballot will be run for oversubscribed events where demand exceeds supply

The application process for tickets for the Paralympic Games will begin on 9 September 2011 and tickets for the London 2012 Festival (part of the Cultural Olympiad) in October 2011
