G4S chosen as official London 2012 Security Services Provider
The London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) has today announced that G4S Secure Solutions has been appointed official Security Services Provider for the London 2012 Games, and the 23rd domestic tier three sponsor.
G4S, which celebrated its 75th anniversary last year, employs 50,000 people in the UK and is widely heralded as one of the world’s biggest security firms. The company has extensive experience of providing security at major sporting events, including Wimbledon, the Ryder Cup and Grand Prix racing at Silverstone. It has also been responsible for security at the Olympic Park site since 2008.
G4S will provide training and management for the 10,000-strong security workforce that will work closely with Police and local authorities, ensuring the Games remains a safe event for competitors and spectators alike. Security personnel will also be present at all competition and non-competition venues during the Games, carrying out a variety of tasks to enable LOCOG to host a secure competition.
LOCOG CEO Paul Deighton said, “This deal represents where we are with our plans for the Games – we’re now looking at operational delivery. G4S will help us ensure that the security provisions in place are robust and of the highest professionalism and we welcome them to the London 2012 family.”
LOCOG and G4S will work in tandem with the Bridging the Gap project, a scheme part-established by LOCOG which focuses on identifying talented people from further education colleges and producing a workforce for the Games. The initiative is set to bring thousands of new recruits into the security industry, and has been awarded the London 2012 ‘Inspire Mark’.
