The creative brains behind Take That’s giant Circus Live shows and stadium spectaculars for Lady Gaga and Kanye West are to take control of the 2012 London Olympics closing ceremony.

Kim Gavin, who also choreographed Take That’s entrance to this week’s Brit Awards, was today named artistic director for the ceremonies of both the Games and the Paralympics. His designer will be Es Devlin, who worked with him on the Circus show which included trapeze artists, clowns and a giant moving model elephant.

Devlin recently designed Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball American tour and has also worked for Kanye, Muse and the Pet Shop Boys.

David Arnold, who has composed music for five James Bond films, Independence Day and The Chronicles Of Narnia as well as songs for Shirley Bassey, George Michael and Björk, will also be involved. The three join a team under the creative eye of Billy Elliot director Stephen Daldry, who will be executive producer of all the ceremonies, with Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle in specific charge of the opening celebrations.
London 2012 chairman Sebastian Coe said: “We’re delighted that the best of British creative talent has joined us. The opening and closing ceremonies are in the best possible hands.”

Gavin, 49, said: “We want it to be colourful, exciting and very much singing-in-the-aisles celebratory.” While the mock riot police dancers who shepherded Take That at the Brits may have caused raised eyebrows, he vowed: “I want the closing ceremony to be fun. I don’t want it to cause controversy.”

Take That frontman Gary Barlow expressed delight at Gavin’s appointment. “Me and the guys are thrilled that Kim has been asked to create the closing ceremony,” he told the Standard. “We know with him in charge, it’s going to be one great celebration for the whole country. And before you ask, he hasn’t asked us to be in the show – yet.”

Devlin said she was delighted to be part of “the greatest show on earth” while David Arnold said it was a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity”, adding: “Our team will be readying an electrifying and thrilling soundtrack for this spectacular event.”
